Morning Musings

By mutual agreement, Miki-chan and I do not leave our dormitory at the same time. We enjoy one another's company - we would not room together if we did not - but mornings are my best times, her worst. If I had to wait for Miki-chan to get ready before I left, I would be in a sour mood all day. To say that she is slow to rise would be an understatement. I am usually picking up my handbag when she stumbles out of our shared bedroom, her hair in disarray.

Mornings are my time. I like to wake up early. The morning is fresh and new. Anything can happen. I like having my tea while looking out the window at the stirrings of life. The birds hopping on the telephone lines. The few businessmen who have to catch the early train - they walk with such purpose, oblivious to their surroundings. The opposite of me. I drink in the sights and sounds as I do my tea.

Even though Miki-chan is not what you would call a light sleeper, I take care not to disturb her in the morning. I lay my clothes out at night, before bed, and make sure my rehearsal bag is packed. I make my bento, or put aside money to pick up something at the theatre for lunch. I charge my phone and my ipod. The only thing I don't do is shower one last time. I prefer morning showers. Fresh, clean me for a fresh day. Not covered in the sweat of the night, or the general muzziness from lying still for hours on end.

On the way to the theatre, I have to put on my face. My public face. The one that smiles brightly but not too boldly. The one that is confident, yet demure. Pure, proper, beautiful. The motto of Takarazuka isn't only a motto - it's a mantra. A way of life. The face you show everyone, no matter what you are feeling truly in your heart. It is a safety net and a butterfly net at the same time.

The walk does not take long - the dormitory is part of the Takarazuka complex, after all - but it takes longer than one would think, because of the paths of the walkways. A performer must approach from a certain direction, and in a certain manner, so there are ways to ensure that happens, no matter where she lives.

The walk is always full of interesting people. The different fan clubs arrange themselves carefully near the performers' entrance, seated in front, standing at the back. Proper, so that everyone can see their favorite performer as she walks past. Everyone can bask in her smile, thrill at her hand waving to them. See and be seen.

My fan club is midway up the path, standing at the back, powder blue silk scarves fluttering like wings or banners. The color of the morning sky at the tops of the trees. I pause every day, say hello, and collect my letters. If I am alone when I walk up, I will stop and chat for a moment or two. Never more than pleasantries, but it makes me happy to be able to address those who support me by name, even if all I can say to them personally is, "good morning; it's lovely to see you." Once in a very rare while, I pull my smaller camera from my handbag and snap a picture of them, or let them do the same with me. It is all a matter of timing.

A final bow and smile, and then I am through, past the gallery of faces, and into the theatre complex itself. I find my name tile on the board and flip it around to mark that I have arrived. One last ritual before my public face changes to my performer's face.

Close Relationships

Kazuki Reika | older sister
Known more commonly as Shion Rie (aka Fuu-chan), Soragumi's top musumeyaku from 2006-2008. Classmates with Miyaki Ren and Daiho Ayato. Retired at the end of 2008, the same year that Suzume debuted. Married Kazuki Ginta in 2012. No children so far. Lives in Shizuoka with her husband. Has always called Suzume "Mimi-chan", from her birth name of Kasumi.

Reika and Suzume are very close. Suzume loves her sister dearly, and counts on the support Reika gives her more than she realizes. If she didn't get her daily texts and steady stream of letters, she would feel lost. She was her sister's biggest fan when Reika was a member of the Revue, and dreamed of following in her footsteps and becoming a top musumeyaku.

However, she is jealous of Reika's successes, even as she thinks on them with pride. She is constantly compared to "Fuu-chan" or "Rie-san" (depending on who is speaking to her), and it needles each time. She is annoyed that, six years on, many of the ladies who knew Reika still refer to Suzume as "Reika's little sister". It doesn't help that Reika's biggest strength as a Takarisienne was dance - what Suzume considers her weakest skill. She is now a year beyond where Reika was when Reika became a top musumeyaku, and that honor seems to be falling further away with each cast announcement. Suzume works hard not to show her negative feelings to the public or to her family - especially not to her sister. The only people who truly know the complications of her feelings are her two best friends, Miki-chan and Bakkun.

Inazuma Mikiko | Classmate, troupe mate, best friend
Known as Miki-chan, Mikiko has been Suzume's best friend since their shared first year at the Takarazuka Music School. Miki-chan is out-spoken, bubbly, and loyal. She knows all, or nearly all, of Suzume's secrets and dreams. She and Suzume live together in the Hankyuu-provided housing for Takarisiennes. Miki-chan has settled comfortably into her role as a character actress in Yukigumi. Her goal is to outlast everyone else in their class and become the kumichou of a troupe one day and a consummate onnayaku because, in her opinion, all the best roles are written for onnayaku.

Suzume trusts Miki-chan completely. She wishes, though, that she could share Miki-chan's opinions of their currently shared lot in troupe, and that she could settle more easily into that role. When roles she hoped for go to other, sometimes younger, musumeyaku, she has trouble remembering to smile. Miki-chan doesn't pass judgment on her, though, and lets her share her tears in the privacy of their living space. In some ways, Miki-chan is another sister to her. Even so, as their reality drifts further from Suzume's desires and closer to Miki-chan's, Suzume feels a little distant from her best friend.

Himura Jun | Classmate, troupe mate, best friend
Bakkun, as she's known, makes up the third part of the friendship triangle. She is an otokoyaku, and is really just starting her ascent toward the top. She was featured as an up-and-comer in the most recent Young Bloods workshop, and she has been given lead roles in the last three shinjen koen performances. She has also received more prominent roles in the main productions - named roles that serve to highlight her talents. There are even rumors that she'll be featured in the next batch of postcards released, because her fan club has grown so much in the last year.

Suzume relies on Bakkun's steadiness and "straight-man" role in their friendship triangle. She gracefully plays the butt of Miki-chan's jokes, and supports Suzume's dreams of being top star with quiet determination. She also encourages Suzume's photography hobby. Thanks to Bakkun, Suzume has mastered the timer on every camera she's ever owned. But, Suzume feels that the other girl is drifting away from her inevitably, as her star rises, and Suzume's fades. Bakkun claims that this is complete nonsense. The two of them are going to be a Top Combi together, and Hankyuu is really just fast-tracking her so she can "catch up" to Suzume. The sentiment is appreciated, but it's starting to wear a little thin, and seem weaker with each iteration.

Hayate Keiko | Fan-club President
The most "formal" of Suzume's close relationships. Hayate-san is 30 years old, and coordinates the efforts of the twenty or so members of Suzume's fan club. The club is recognizable at irimachi or demachi by the powder blue scarves they wear - thick, fluffy, hand-knit ones in winter; thin, decorative ones in summer. Suzume has one of each type, presented to her by Hayate-san, which she wears to the opening night of each run of a show, and calls the scarves her lucky charms.

Self-Doubt

Rehearsal today is filled with tension. Everyone has put on their most professional masks, and is giving two hundred percent. Everyone smiles politely or tries to look cool and unconcerned. But it's more of a performance than the show itself. Today, the cameras have come. Anything we do, or fail to do - any stray glance or yawn or giggle - could end up immortalized on DVD if it happens during a part of the show chosen to highlight the principals.

Miki-chan and Bakkun and I sit together as always. Instead of chatting or running lines or writing each other notes in the margins of our scripts, we fix our eyes on our top star and her nibante, pretending that we are studying their performance. The little red light across the rehearsal hall stares at us, and we don't want to be caught looking less than dedicated.

Miki-chan is so wrapped up in this act that she nearly misses the cue to get into position for our scene. Bakkun and I have to nudge her twice to make her move. Not an easy task when you don't want the camera to see your friend's folly. We are three in a group of twelve underclassmen who must dance around our top star - expressing in movement the emotion she expresses in her voice. The sorrow of a supposed betrayal which will, in a few scenes, be revealed as a trick to lure out the villain - a guest from Senka.

As the music changes and we hurry into position, I feel the nerves tighten in my stomach. Of all the dancers in this piece, I am the weakest. Half a beat too slow, back not arched as much as it should be, fingers not as gracefully posed. Bakkun says it's all in my head. But with the camera positioned downstage left, closest to my starting mark, I cannot help but worry. My first movements are stiff, stilted, because of this. I can feel it. I can see the choreographer at the long table not three feet away tighten his jaw slightly. He doesn't look directly at me, but he can see it all the same. And the camera will catch the difference between my stilted movement and the fluidity of the eleven other dancers.

Fortunately, we must vocalize in this scene as well as dance. No words, just notes to accent and echo our top star. To highlight her voice in contrast to ours. Once I can open my mouth, I feel a little better. Not relaxed. I am never relaxed while performing. But more at ease. My movement reflects this. I feel more graceful when I can sing.

And then the scene is done and we scatter as our top star strides off stage. Miki-chan and I move to the back of the rehearsal hall to help shift a piece of set. She smiles at me as we lift it. "You did fine," she mouths to me. Our backs are to the camera, so I can give her a quick smile. I don't necessarily believe her, but I am glad of her faith in me.

Just a little information

Koizumi Suzume is the second daughter of a wealthy family from Shimizu-ku. Her father owns a large fishing company and her mother is a housewife. Both she and her older sister displayed an early talent for the arts - her for singing and piano in particular - and after a trip to Takarazuka when she was six, she decided she wanted to attend the Takarazuka Music School. Her older sister was also actively pursuing acceptance to the school.

Suzume was accepted into the music school at age seventeen on her second try (her older sister was accepted on the first try) and did reasonably well while at school. Singing remained her strongest talent, while dancing was/is her weakest, though she is by no means a bad dancer. She was sorted as a musumeyaku after her first year, and upon completing her second year became a member of Yukigumi, where she remains to this day.

She gets along well with her troupe, and has a few close friends in troupe - two of her batchmates were also sorted Yukigumi. She wants to be noticed and be given larger roles, but is content with the roles she's been given so far. She wants to be a top musumeyaku one day, like her older sister before her, and is often compared to her older sister by the older members of her troupe, even though her sister was a Soragumi girl. She tries to pitch her performances in a different style to her sister's - she thinks her first shinjin koen lead helped to showcase the differences between them on stage, and to portray an off-stage image different to her sister's.

Suzume's off-stage persona is unassuming, polite, and cheerful, but not excessively so. She is a little silly at times, but tries to hide that by hiding behind a camera lens when she can. Let others do the silly things; she'll record them for posterity and keep herself free from gossip. She wishes she could be a little more cool, like the current top musumeyaku, but she and her friends are a bit too giggly for that sort of image.

Even though she dislikes always being compared to her sister, the two are very close. They write letters to each other often, even though they text daily. She was supportive of her older sister's shows, and her sister is likewise supportive of hers - they have joked that each should be the other's fan club president. Her sister recently married, and has moved back closer to their parents, but she still comes to see at least one performance of each show Suzume is in.
